Muslim inmates fed pork during Ramadan: activists

Los Angeles: A federal judge granted a restraining order Thursday forcing prison guards in Alaska to stop giving Muslim inmates pork as they break their fasts during Ramadan, rights campaigners said. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) filed a lawsuit on Tuesday claiming Anchorage Correctional Complex had violated constitutional prohibitions against “cruel and unusual punishment.” CAIR said the US District Court for Alaska had granted its request for an emergency temporary order requiring guards to provide adequate meals in accordance with government health guidelines. “CAIR has reported an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president,” the Washington-based organization said in a statement. Army officer of ‘human shield’ fame detained with woman in hotel

NEW DELHI: Major Nitin Leetul Gogoi, the officer who used Farooq Ahmed Dar, a Kashmiri civilian as a “human shield” was briefly detained by the police along with a woman from a hotel in Srinagar. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning when Army officer, who had booked the hotel online, arrived at Hotel Grand Mamta to check in, reported DNA. MUMBAI: As the sacred month of Ramzan has already started, like other Bollywood celebs, actor Varun Dhawan also extended his wishes to his fans and revealed that he too observes fast on Ramzan’s first day. The actor took to social media to share that he decided to take up fasting for the first day of Ramadan adding that his gym coach and others at the fitness center are also observing fast. In a video recording shared on Insta, Varun is heard saying: “Salam Alaikum. Jaisi ki aap sabko pata hai ki ramzan shuru ho gaya hai and it’s a very holy period. MEP chief Nowhera Shaikh accused of cheating, complaint filed

BENGALURU: At least seven candidates file complaint against founder and president of All India Mahila Empowerment Party (MEP) Dr Nowhera Shaikh accusing her of cheating party workers. According to the complainants, Nowhera had allegedly collected blank cheques from the candidates before awarding tickets and B-forms but did not return it. However, the candidates alleged that they had not received single paise as promised but instead threatened by the party chief. So far seven complaints has been filed against her and five others across the state including Bengaluru. A case has been filed against Nowhera and others under IPC sections 420- cheating, 406- criminal breach of trust, 506- criminal intimidation and 34- acts and further investigations are on. Crane collapses in Grand Mosque in Makkah

Riyadh: A mobile crane lever has fallen inside Makkah’s Grand Mosque, injuring one worker. Student drags her college to court for not allowing to wear hijab

Mumbai: A student of Sai Homeopathic Medical College (SHMC) in Bhiwandi moved the Bombay High Court against her college. She was reportedly not allowed to wear a hijab (headscarf). She was barred from sitting for examinations on the ground of having low attendance. The girl, a resident of Bandra in Mumbai and student of homoeopathy has moved court on Monday seeking permission to appear for the first-year examinations of Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS) course at Sai Homeopathic Medical College (SHMC) in Bhiwandi beginning June 1. She claimed that she cleared her Common Entrance Test and secured admission in SHMC on December 14, 2016.
