FRIDAY – The best day of the week

Friday is a very important day for Muslims.   It is more significant and more beneficial than any other day of the week.   It is the day that Muslims gather together to pray in congregation. Directly before the prayer they listen to a lecture designed to empower them with valuable knowledge about God, and the religion of Islam.   It is a blessed day that has been designated as such by God, Almighty; no other day of the week shares its virtues. A believer’s entire life is one of worship; even celebrations are conducted as worship.   While there is no special place or special time to worship God, there are moments, days, or times that God has made more superior; Friday is one of those times. From the traditions of Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, we learn that “The best day in the sight of God is Friday, the day of congregation”.[1]   Congregational prayers (obligatory for men) are one of the most strongly emphasized...

Standing for 6 hours may help you lose those extra pounds

Washington: You might want to read this on your feet. A new research has found that standing instead of sitting for six hours a day could prevent weight gain and help people to actually lose weight. The study examined whether standing burns more calories than sitting. The researchers analysed results from a total of 46 studies with 1,184 participants in all. Participants, on average, were 33 years old, 60 percent were men, and the average body mass index and weight were 24 kg/m2 and 65 kg, respectively. Senior author Professor Francisco Lopez-Jimenez, said, “Standing not only burns more calories, the additional muscle activity is linked to lower rates of heart attacks, strokes, and diabetes, so the benefits of standing could go beyond weight control.” Participants were standing still, while in reality people make small movements while standing. The gap in energy expenditure between standing and sitting could be even greater than the study found. “Our re...

Scientists develop world’s first blood test to detect Alzheimer’s

Sydney: Australian scientists in collaboration with researchers from Japan on Thursday announced the world’s first accurate blood test for Alzheimer’s disease which can detect the illness up to 20 years before any symptoms occur. The test, which spots the illnes at an accuracy of over 90 per cent, identifies the build-up of a protein called amyloid-beta, which is an early indicator of the disease, Xinhua news agency reported. Up until now, the only way to determine if a patient had Alzheimer’s was by highly invasive and expensive methods, including brain scans and lumbar punctures. But the breakthrough by the University of Melbourne’s Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health will mean diagnosing the disease will become far easier. “In the first instance, it will be an invaluable tool in increasing the speed of screening potential patients for new drug trials,” said Colin Masters, Professor at Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health. “Progre...
